Tengdahl launched its beautiful S/S collection at the Mercedes Benz Fashion Festival last night, and chose Paula Hall jewellery to accessorise the looks. For the parade, Paula (pictured above left with Renea O'Shea from Tengdahl) created oversized versions of the current collection of earrings (with customised clip on clasps for quick backstage dressing of course!). Check out Tengdahl's new collection here, and our earring designs straight off the catwalk here. [Model images courtesy of Mercedes Benz Fashion Festival Brisbane].
The Cocktail ring is the epitome of elegance and style, with extravagant proportions that makes many women weak at the knees. While most of us have a cocktail ring or two in our jewellery boxes, very few of us know the poignant history behind this timeless jewellery piece.
The cocktail ring dates back to the 1920s in the United States of America in a time called the Prohibition Era. The Prohibition Era was marked by a ban on alcohol and an insurgence in fashion. With so many opposing the ban, men and women headed to the underground Cocktail scene, where they dressed in their finest flapper dresses – bold clothing and extravagant jewels that thumbed their nose at restrictions and societal norms. The availability of large semi-precious stones in vibrant colours broadened the scope of jewellery design at the time.
Expensive-looking and attention-grabbing rings were the symbol of independence - not just from the limitations of prohibition, but from the expectation of women to wear long dresses and refrain from drinking or socialising as equals with men. In wearing a cocktail ring, women were making a statement that they were ignoring the rules of the Prohibition era, and society in general. This marked the beginning of the independent and slightly rebellious woman, a trademark characteristic that continued through the decades.
Cocktail rings are as popular as ever in today’s society, and have formed a staple of the quintessential jewellery collection. However, unlike in the 1920s, the rings are no longer made exclusively with precious stones, with swarovski crystals, cubic zirconia and diamond simulants making cocktail rings affordable for everyone. Sex And The City author Candace Bushnell was recently in Australia, and we were thrilled to discover that Candace left our shores with a pair of Paula Hall earrings!
Some lucky Paula Hall clients were fortunate enough to attend her Brisbane lunch, hosted by Business Chicks, where Candace told attendees how much she "loved" her new Paula Hall jewels.
